Clay Matthews, qui est pressenti pour le trophée de Defensive Player of the Year, participera à son premier Super Bowl. Sélectionné comme 26e choix lors de la Draft 2009 par Green Bay, il a depuis été appelé deux fois au Pro Bowl. Ni son grand-père, ni son père, ni son oncle n'ont gagné le titre suprême de champion NFL et il pourrait devenir le premier Matthews à porter une bague au doigt.
Quant à Troy Polamalu, lui est un habitué du rendez-vous. Depuis qu'il a été choisi en 16e position par Pittsburgh durant la Draft 2003, il a remporté deux fois le Graal avec les Steelers, à l'issue de la saison 2005 contre les Seattle Seahawks et à l'issue de la saison 2008 contre les Arizona Cardinals. Troy Polamalu est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs joueurs de son équipe et comme l'un des meilleurs Safeties de l'histoire de la NFL puisqu'il a notamment été nommé dans la NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
Comme le fait remarquer Michael Lev de l'OC Register, les deux Trojans qui participent au Super Bowl XLV sont les deux plus chevelus. Il conseille ainsi avec humour à Mark Sanchez de se laisser pousser les cheveux pour la saison prochaine, alors que les Jets ont échoué deux années consécutives aux portes de la finale.
